But you probably like different models from each brand like I do.

So which brand do you "marry"? you want practical, you want fun, you need a hauler, you need your classic and you need youre super exotic.

*Additional Note...some have mentioned the TG response. I know top gear "settled" this with the "lancia" and I agree with their reasons but their feature was clearly are retrospective vote. I think if they had to choose today, they'd do expansive, exhausting testing of numerous brands and cars...and at the close Clarkson looks at the camera and says:

"We've seen some truly fantastic cars today from some supremely well engineered manufactures. But, we realized something astonishing. If you want to have exceedingly capable vehicles for the rest of your life...we realized there's not only one brand you have to buy, but really only one specific model you have to buy....Range Rover. The new range rover is our camera car and we've kept pace for the most part with every vehicle we've tested, while remain completely comfortable, carrying tons of gear. Simply its the best, it can get you anywhere, carry the kids and the dog and has superb driving characteristics for a vehicle of this size...why would you get any other car, if you had the top of line range rover as your option?and on that bombshell, its time to end."

its a cop out but SUCH a top gear answer.

I suppose BMW wouldn't be a bad one. Toyota, with the 2000GT and old JDM Lexuses, old Celicas, Supras, etc. would be nice. Same goes for Nissan with its wide array of great cars. Ford and Chevy have lots of great muscle cars, some good sports cars, and a couple of supercars (GT and ZR1s)...

Toyota. Just imagine all the Camrys and Corollas.

Just kidding. I'd go Mercedes Benz because AMG. Pagani is a close second because fuck practicality. Nissan/Datsun is 3rd on the list. For all the Z cars, the GT-Rs, some nice pick up trucks, and their older cars as well.

Porsche easily. The 996+ Carreras are amazingly practical daily driver cars, especially in coupe all-wheel drive form. The original 911s are great for fun/tracking. You've got the 924/944/968 lineup for drifting. You've got the Cayenne for towing. You've got the Boxster for top down cruising...

For people touting Mercedes, have you ever driven them? They are boats. Don't get me wrong - they are some of the best handling 4,000lb cars you will ever drive. But that doesn't change the fact that they are 4,000lb cars.

After thinking long and hard about this my first thought was BMW but then I thought wait, endless money so who needs practicality and if you need something hauled just pay somebody to do it for you. My final decision is Ferrari. I'd have a 612 for hauling the kids around, a 458 spyder for sunny days, an F12 for cross country jaunts, an FF for the winter, and of course an F40, F50, and an Enzo for playing. Then to top it all off pretty much one of each of all the 50's and 60's classics and some iconic racers for vintage racing. If I left anything out, I have endless money so I'll just add whatever I find that gives me a chubby.

As an engineering student, I was going to say that.

But one brand to go nuts as a fan at races... Porsche? They have the one car that's the benchmark for all sports cars and sports compacts for the past 60 years, the 911. Engine in the wrong location but it teaches you to be a better driver. They have front engined chassises to build drift cars, they have mid engined sports cars and supercars. And it's a decent brand for a RWD purist.

Top Gear covered this and came up with Lancia, but I don't want a car that keeps breaking. I guess it's alright if I have unlimited money and just keep fabricating replacement parts for the stock parts that break. But they aren't in existence today.

Porsche has a pretty strong and thorough presence in motorsports, and uses a lot of their production cars to represent themselves on the grid.

Only downside to having your own brand is having to establish a history and racing presence (spec series and record wins in racing series today that have long winding histories involving big names).

That, or Honda, they have bikes, watercrafts, and aircrafts. But I guess we're talking about cars, and they make a lot of boring cars.

Kinja'd!!! Manuél Ferrari > Vandelay Industries

Kinja'd!!!3

Assuming this rule extends to race cars that are not street legal, I would have to go with Merc. There is no other brand that has such a big mix of cars to choose from. Even if you had unlimited money and could therefore hire drivers to drive you around in their own cars I think there would still be situations where you'd prefer to drive or have the drivers drive one of your cars. And there would be times when you want something practical that doesn't stand out. Mercedes gives you a little bit of everything:

300E for when you want to drive somewhere and not stand out at all

Kinja'd!!!

Car for date night in Beverley Hills

Kinja'd!!!

If I had unlimited money I would probably get married, divorced and remarried once or twice. I'd be really annoying if I had that much money and my wives would leave. This would result in having lots of kids. An R63 AMG would be perfect to haul them around in when they're all staying with me for the weekend

Kinja'd!!!

There would also be larger Mercedes vehicles for road trips

Kinja'd!!!

There would be the GL for ski trips

Kinja'd!!!

The SSK for classic awesomeness (I would get a 300 SL Gullwing too, but we all know what it looks like so no need to post)

Kinja'd!!!

The C63 Sedan for somewhat understated stints around town

Kinja'd!!!

A classic SL for Sunday drives

Kinja'd!!!

A big truck to get my race cars to the track

Kinja'd!!!

And since money is literally no object I would buy several race cars, including this one

Kinja'd!!!

I don't even own a Merc right now. But I think it's pretty clear that Mercedes is the answer to this question. No other company could give you such a broad range of vehicles. And if you had unlimited money you would need a lot of toys...

If your enthusiasm for cars is such that in addition to sedans, coupes, and SUVs, you're going to do regular track days, and haul tires/tools/spares/etc., then you're going to need a van and/or a roll-back car hauler for your track toy. How many of the shown marques make vans and wreckers in addition to great sedans, sports cars, and SUVs? Seems to me your choices are either American or Mercedes.

Ford gets you the Ford GT for your track toy, boring sedans, decent pickups, vans, and car haulers, and nothing for a kickass SUV.

Chevy gets you the Corvette and Camaro for sports cars and track toys, new SS for a killer sedan, decent pickups, vans, and car haulers, and the so-so Trailblazer SS for a hot SUV.

Chrysler gets you the Viper ACR for a track toy, Charger SRT8 sedan, decent pickups, vans, and car haulers, and the killer Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 SUV, which will eat a turbo Cayenne.

But you have unlimited money, right? Mercedes gives you the whole AMG line for bad-assery in everything from SUVs to sedans to sports cars to supercars. And you mustn't forget the Unimog for serious off-roading.

Oh, and for your track toy, to haul on a rollback-equipped Sprinter? Any of the AMG Black series. Or you could up the ante with the CLK...

However, if I could buy old models, I'd have to say Jaguar. Unlimited money means I could own a D-Type, which is pretty much my favorite car ever. Followed by the E-Type, which is followed by the XK-140, which is followed by the C-Type ... .

Let's ignore that they are different brands and just think of them both as Mercedes :)

Since we'd have unlimited money we could have the SLR in addition to the SLS. The SLR can be considered a Merc since it was sold at Mercedes dealerships. And there could be a CLK Black in addition to the C63 sedan.

Plus I would definitely have to get one of these:

I'm a german car fanatic, my dream garage includes such things as an 850csi, 944 turbo, 190 EVO II and some other goodies from the 80's and 90's. It's hard for me to choose a company though. Porsches have a smaller variety but each car is worth owning in some Porschephile way. BMW has made some great cars, I want ALL THE Ms, but so many are quite pedestrian. Mercedes, in my opinion the most important company in all of cars and creators of the greatest car ever produced (W140 S class, no I don't own one) but so many of their cars have been ruined by boring chassis dynamics. Despite all of these concerns, BMW is where I'd choose to go because at the end of the day they offer me the greatest variety of cars I'd want to actually have. A manual E60 M5 for the DD, an X5M for trips to Aspen (I have unlimited money, right?), an 850CSI for kicks, an M1 for the track, and a bunch of m3s, m5s, and diesel wagons to put crazy power in.

I'd go Volvo.

Kinja'd!!!

The really beautiful C70 makes a great cruiser (yes, it is expenisve, but unlimited money)

Kinja'd!!!

1998 Volvo V70R... AWD and a lot of power; plus rear jump seats! And it would have to be this year since I love this body style.

Kinja'd!!!

Volvo S60 Polestar. Yes, it is really just a concept; but I could afford it. This thing destroys any M series.

Kinja'd!!!

Volvo Amazon wagon. My car show baby. I love the mirrors and grille.

Kinja'd!!!

Volvo P1800 ES... look at that hatch!

Kinja'd!!!

And the XC60 Polestar (in that color) for my winter SUV.

Volvo makes a car for every need!

Gots to go Chevy, because I need serious towing capability and want 'Merican supercars and classic muscle.

With enough fabrication work, you can make any car bulletproof, literally and figuratively.

Oh, or Lotus, since they still have a spot on the Formula 1 grid.

As an actual Engineer (FE/PE) stop saying 'as an engineering student'

It's annoying.

Add a G55 (the one with the compressor) and I'm sold and then the list is probably almost perfect

Lambo. Because SUV. And Veneno, and Miura....

I wanted to say McLaren so bad because I would daily drive the hell out of a P1 and F1, but there are days where I'd need to do more than an afternoon's worth of grocery shopping, or I'd just really like to be in a truck, or want my wife to be in a truck, or I have to go downtown and don't want to be rear-ended, or have to valet park...

Well Lamborghini is going to give us the Urus, a fancy Cayenne, which is itself a fancy Volkswagen, but that's another topic. Not the best looking thing but it'll do. And in the meantime I could have a fleet of LM002's in case one breaks down.

I'd just have to settle for the Aventador, Countach, Miura for every other day of the week. Veneno on weekends, Egoista on special occasions.

It would’ve been BMW, but I’m not a huge fan of their recent stuff

Volvo or Saab would be cool, but I need more variety

Almost Lancia or Alfa as well, but reliability is a thing

That leaves me with one option:

Mazda.
